Husband blames wife’s lung cancer death on delayed treatment

Lung cancer

CHICAGO — A Cook County man is suing Physicians of the North Shore, claiming a doctor there misdiagnosed and delayed treatment of his wife’s ultimately fatal lung cancer.

Jack Nelson, individually and as independent administrator of the estate of Sue Swanson, filed a lawsuit Jan. 29 in Cook County Circuit Court against Dr. Steven Levine and Physicians of the North Shore Ltd., alleging medical malpractice.

Swanson, a 20-year smoker with a family history of lung cancer, came under Levine’s care on Aug. 1, 2013, according to the complaint. After a chest X-ray on Aug. 15, 2013, showed a mass in her lung, the suit says Swanson received no further treatment until nearly a year later, when a CT scan showed the mass had grown. A biopsy on Aug. 1, 2014, showed Swanson was suffering from lung cancer. Approximately four months later, on Jan. 25, 2015, she passed away from the illness.

Nelson seeks damages of more than $50,000. He is represented by attorneys Steven M. Levin, Margaret Battersby and Cari F. Silverman of Levin & Perconti in Chicago.
