CHICAGO — A Cook County woman is suing Thorek Memorial Hospital and two doctors, claiming their negligence during bowel surgery caused her mother’s death.
Meredith Ries, independent executor of the estate of Mamie Thornton, filed a lawsuit Jan. 29 in Cook County Circuit Court against Thorek Memorial Hospital, Dr. Marc Adajar, S.T. Surgical Consultants S.C. (also known as Precision Surgical Group) and Dr. Maria Osipova, alleging negligence and wrongful death.
According to the complaint, Thornton was hospitalized Jan. 31, 2014, at Thorek Memorial for a small bowel obstruction. During a procedure the following day to repair two hernias, Adajar and Osipova allegedly injured Thornton’s bowel and colon. As a result of her injuries, the suit says, Thornton developed sepsis, fever, tachycardia and confusion and passed away Feb. 5, 2014.
Ries seeks damages in excess of $50,000. She is represented by attorney James A. Karamanis and Shane M. Bradwell of Barney & Karamanis LLP in Chicago.
