CHICAGO – A Cook County woman is seeking damages from former radio personality over an allegedly unpaid loan.

Laura Barr filed a lawsuit on Jan. 29 in Cook County Circuit Court against Deon Welton, citing breach of contract.

Barr asserts that sometime after Jan. 23, 2008, she and Welton agreed upon a $14,125 loan in which Welton would pay 18 percent interest for the 36-month life of the loan agreement. Throughout the course of the year, Welton would allegedly send Barr checks and the checks would be returned and/or denied due to the account being closed. The alleged dates for these return checks were Feb. 15 and 21 and April 12 and 26 in 2008.

On Dec. 16, 2008, Welton supposedly emailed Barr acknowledging that he owed her $15,500 and agreeing to pay a late penalty fee of $200 per day that the debt is not paid. Barr claims that she agreed and refrained from pursuing legal action against Welton. On or about April 3, 2009, Welton allegedly issued a check for $17,000. It was allegedly returned. On or about May 22, 2009, Welton allegedly issued another check to Barr for $3,000. It was, once again, allegedly returned due to the account being closed.

In 2010, Welton allegedly plead guilty to forgery and theft was sentenced to four-and-a-half years. Barr attests that, due to Welton’s fraudulent acts, she has been damaged in the amount of $524,100, plus interest.

She is suing for $524,100 plus interest and costs of the suit, and any other reward deemed proper by the court. She is represented by Joseph T. Gentleman in Chicago.
