Daughter brings wrongful death suit against mother’s nursing home

CHICAGO — A Cook County woman says her 69-year-old mother developed serious injuries while a resident of the Manor Care nursing home in Kankakee that contributed to her death.

Colleen Bennett, independent administrator of the estate of Mary Parejko (deceased), filed a lawsuit Feb. 3 in Cook County Circuit Court against Manor Care of Kankakee Ill. LLC (doing business as Manorcare Health Services-Kankakee), HCR Manorcare Inc., Manorcare Health Services LLC and Heartland Employment Services LLC, alleging violations of the Nursing Home Care Act.

According to the complaint, while Parejko resided at Manor Care, she suffered wrist and hip fractures, as well as numerous falls, allegedly due to the facility’s negligence. As a result of her injuries, the suit says, Parejko underwent an overall deterioration of her physical and mental condition, unnecessary pain and suffering, and other damage.

Bennett seeks damages in excess of $50,000. She is represented by attorneys Margaret P. Battersby Black and Andrew J. Thut of Levin & Perconti in Chicago.
