CHICAGO — A Chicago woman is suing Northwestern Memorial Hospital and other defendants, alleging they assaulted her when they removed her from their property.
Lisa J. Gillard filed a lawsuit May 31 in Cook County Circuit Court against Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Prentice Hospital, Starbucks Corporation and Universal Protections Services, alleging assault and violation of civil rights.
According to the complaint, Gillard suffered injuries and damages to her reputation as a result of being forcefully removed from the facility's Feinberg Chapel for reading the Bible in February 2015, and from a Starbucks on the premises in October 2015. The plaintiff alleges the defendants denied her use of public accommodations and infringed upon her religious freedom.
Gillard seeks a trial by jury, judgment of $49 million and the firing of 11 of the defendants' employees. She is representing herself.
