Family alleges medical health providers' negligence led to death

CHICAGO — A family member is suing a group of medical providers, alleging their negligence caused her sister's death.

Cynthia Allen, independent administrator of the estate of Darice Graefen, filed a lawsuit May 27 in Cook County Circuit Court against Dr. Nicholas Rizzo, Premiere General Medicine SC and Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, doing business as a Chicago Lake Shore Medical Associates, alleging negligence in failing to properly diagnose Graefen's condition and prescribing medicines that made her condition worse.

According to the complaint, in July 2014, Graefen was prescribed several medicines for heer nausea which caused her blood sugar to get critically high, ultimately resulting in her death July 4, 2014, of diabetic ketoacidosis. The plaintiff alleges the defendants prescribed Victoza to Graefen without properly evaluating her blood glucose levels.

Allen seeks judgment of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorney William A. Cirignani of Cirignani Heller & Harman LLP in Chicago.
