Health professionals accused of negligence that culminated in death

Medical malpractice 06

CHICAGO — The administrator of a deceased woman's estate is suing Michael Kryza, M.D., The Epic Group-Emergency Physicians An Illinois Concern S.C., Morris Hospital, Daniel Jurak, D.O., and Family Physicians of Coal City, medical health providers, alleging negligence and insufficient measures taken to prevent injuries that culminated in the woman's death.

Paul Passafiume, as independent administrator of the estate of Lois Akau-Passafiume, filed a complaint on June 10 in Cook County Circuit Court against the defendants, alleging that they failed to provide proper medical care to Akau-Passafiume.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that Akau-Passafiume suffered injuries which contributed and resulted in her death due to the continued use of the NuvaRing contraceptive, which was not supposed to be used with the presence of extensive saphenous vein thrombosis. The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible because they allegedly failed to advise Akau-Passafiume to discontinue the use of an estrogen-containing contraceptive that could be fatal to her when she was diagnosed with an extensive saphenous vein thrombosis.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendants in an amount in excess of the jurisdictional limits of this court. He is represented by John W. Burnett of Motherway & Napleton, LLP in Chicago.
