CHICAGO — A mother and her son are suing the City of Chicago and its Independent Police Review Authority, alleging police violated the man's civil rights by allowing him to suffer brain injuries during a purported suicide attempt while in custody.

Lisa Alcorn filed a petition for discovery on Aug. 26 in Cook County Circuit Court against the city.

Alcorn alleges Chicago Police arrested her son, Tyler Lumar, without telling her where they had taken him.

According to the complaint, Lumar later suffered severe physical injuries, including brain injuries. Alcorn said police have claimed Lumar attempted to commit suicide using his T-shirt as a strangulation device However, she said police have refused return all pf Lumar's personal belongings, including the T-shirt they claimed he attempted to strangle himself with.

Alcorn has asked the court to order the city and police to preserve and protect all evidence, and grant Alcorn access to the evidence. Alcorn is represented by attorney Bryan J. O'Connor, of O'Connor Law Group LLC in Chicago.
