South Shore Hospital blamed in wrongful death lawsuit

CHICAGO — A deceased woman's family has filed a wrongful death claim against medical care providers, alleging negligence.

Ebony Smith, as independent administrator to collect of the estate of Marlene Smith, is suing South Shore Hospital, Elbert Smith, M.D., and Illinois/ Indiana Em-1 Medical Services, S.C.. The plaintiff filed a complaint on Sept. 14 in Cook County Circuit Court against the defendants, alleging that they failed to provide proper care to Marlene Smith.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that Marlene Smith suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest, contributing to her death. The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible, saying there was a failure to properly monitor Marlene Smith's respiratory status and an inappropriate removal of her ventilatory support.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendant in an amount greater than $50,000. She is represented by Michael E. Bonamarte, Jaime A. Koziol, and Kent Winingham of Levin & Perconti in Chicago.
