CHICAGO — A mother and her child are suing medical personnel affiliated with NorthShore University Health, alleging they mishandled the child's condition, causing the child's leg to need to be amputated.

Sonja Downs filed suit against a doctor, identified as Bruce S. Bauer, M.D., and Northshore University Healthsystem, alleging her child developed gangrene and ultimately had a leg amputation as a result of negligence. The plaintiffs filed a complaint on Sept. 20 in Cook County Circuit Court against the defendants.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that improper care led to the child's leg amputation. The plaintiffs hold the defendants responsible for failing to properly address the conditions leading up to gangrene and amputation.

The plaintiffs request a trial by jury and seek judgment against the defendants in an amount greater than $50,000 plus court costs. They are represented by Craig D. Brown of Meyers & Flowers, LLC in St. Charles.
