Man hurt in crash wants court to nix healthcare liens

CHICAGO — A man has filed a petition to adjudicate healthcare liens with Illinois Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Rush University Medical Center named as respondents, claiming that their liens against him are invalid and that his attempts to resolve them have been unsuccessful.

Cristoval Vazquez filed a petition on Dec. 21 in Cook County Circuit Court against the defendants, alleging that their liens in connection with injuries he suffered in a 2011 vehicle collision are invalid.

According to the complaint, the petitioner alleges that he has suffered damages because the respondents have attempted to assert liens against his third-party tort liability claim in Michigan. The petitioner says  the respondents should have submitted claims to the no-fault carrier, taken steps to protect their interests or worked with the petitioner to resolve their liens. Illinois Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Rush University Medical Center responsible because the defendants allegedly failed to provide benefits to the plaintiff.

The petitioner requests that the court adjudicate the respondents' alleged liens to zero. He is represented by Raymond C. Steadmon of McKeen & Associates, P.C. in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
