Adventist Bolingbrook accused of negligence in new mom's death

Medical malpractice 03

CHICAGO – The husband of a woman who died following repeated trips to the emergency room at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital for headaches following the birth of her child is suing the facility and the physician who treated her, alleging insufficient measures were taken to prevent her death.

Rafael Dominguez-Hernandez, husband and special administrator of the estate of Leticia Barrios Ortiz, filed suit against Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, Adventist Health System, Suburban Physicians, S.C., and Muhammad Siddiq, M.D., on Jan. 5 in Cook County Circuit Court, alleging they failed to provide proper medical care to his wife.

According to the complaint, a month after giving birth, Ortiz visited the emergency room at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital on two occasions in October 2015, complaining of severe headaches, nausea and dizziness. She was given an initial diagnosis and told to follow-up with a neurologist or return to the hospital if her conditioned worsened. She returned a few days later, again complaining of a severe headache, and doctors allegedly prescribed medication for her pain and nausea, and sent her home. That evening, she returned to the hospital and soon lost consciousness.

She was transferred to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, where she died on Nov. 6, 2015.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendant in an amount that exceeds the jurisdictional limits of this court plus court costs. He is represented by George Argionis and Timothy R. Lea of Argionis & Associates, LLC in Chicago.
