CHICAGO — A mother is suing The University of Chicago Medical Center, formerly known as The University of Chicago Hospitals, alleging negligence in the care of her infant son.
Julie Miles filed a complaint on Jan. 19 in Cook County Circuit Court against the defendant, alleging improprieties in the treatment and evaluation of her son.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges her son was put on an antibiotic regimen in the pediatric intensive-care unit after his birth, then was taken off antibiotics prior to discharge. She alleges he fell into severe septic shock two weeks later, with a diagnosis of Streptococcus meningitis that left him with catastrophic brain injury. The plaintiff holds the hospital responsible for allegedly failing to diagnose meningitis prior to discharge, failure to order repeat blood cultures, discontinuation of antibiotic therapy and negligently discharging the patient.
The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendant in an amount that exceeds the jurisdictional limits of this court. She is represented by John B. Kralovec and Joseph M. Conboy of Kralovec, Jambois & Schwartz in Chicago.
