Surgeons allegedly injected patient with toxic dye at Northwestern Memorial Hospital

Medical malpractice 07

CHICAGO — A patient is suing Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation for allegedly taking insufficient measures to prevent surgeons from injecting him with a toxic dye during brain surgery.

Elijah Goodwin filed a complaint on March 14 in Cook County Circuit Court alleging that the defendants failed to provide him with proper care.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges he sustained permanent damage to his lungs, brain and other organs from having the wrong dye used on him. The dye, called "Brilliant Green" dye, is sometimes used as a topical anesthetic but is toxic if injected into the bloodstream. The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible for allegedly failing to verify the proper dye to be used on him.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendants in an amount greater than $50,000, plus court costs. He is represented by Ardwin E. Boyer of Newman, Boyer & Statham Ltd. in Chicago.
