Man claims Virginia-based debt collector falsely threatened to contact IRS

CHICAGO — A consumer is suing Portfolio Recovery Associates LLC, a collection agency, citing alleged misrepresentation in debt collection for making a false statement regarding his debt.

Rodolfo Coronel Jr. filed a complaint on March 13 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC alleging the debt collector sent a collection letter to the plaintiff that contained false statements regarding his debt on an Old Navy charge account.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges the defendant threatened the plaintiff to disclose information regarding his debt to the IRS, which was a false statement.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks compensatory and punitive damages, court costs and any further relief this court grants. He is represented by Michael Wood and Celetha Chatman of Community Lawyers Group Ltd. in Chicago.
