Cook County, officials accused of charging unlawful court fees

CHICAGO — A woman has filed a class action lawsuit against Cook County Circuit Clerk Dorothy Brown, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas and Cook County, alleging they force litigants to pay unconstitutional fees.

Julie A. Clark filed a complaint on Sept. 15 in Cook County Circuit Court, alleging the defendants charged her an unlawful fee.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that she was damaged from having her motion denied unless she paid a fee, which she said violated her constitutional rights.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks enjoin the defendants, plus court costs and any further relief this court grants. She is represented by Thomas A. Zimmerman Jr., Amelia S. Newton, Sharon A. Harris, Matthew C. De Re, Nickolas J. Hagmana and Maebettty Kirby of Zimmerman Law Offices P.C. in Chicago.
