Neal Gerber & Eisenberg LLP issued the following announcement on May 31.

Four Neal, Gerber & Eisenberg LLP practice groups and 16 attorneys have been recognized among the top in the nation in the newly released 2018 edition of The Legal 500 United States.

The firm was recommended in the areas of M&A/Corporate & Commercial: M&A: Middle-market (sub-$500 million); Real Estate; Employee Benefits, Executive Compensation and Retirement Plans: Design; and US Taxes: Non-contentious. In addition, Jill B. Berkeley was listed as an elite Leading Lawyer in the Industry Focus - Insurance: Advice to Policyholders area.

The Legal 500 mentions the work of the Corporate practice group “in the metals and mining space, where it regularly works alongside leading Canadian firms on significant deals.” David S. Stone and John J. Koenigsknecht stand out for their experience in this area. Michael B. Gray, Cristina W. DeMento and Joshua A. Klein are also all recommended for their corporate work.

Clients who worked with the firm’s Real Estate group said the firm is “outstanding in the field of commercial real estate” and that it “has a solid reputation in the property space.” The firm is particularly well-known for large-scale transactional matters, most frequently those involving retail shopping centers, hotels, and media facilities. Avram I. Feldman is recommended because he is “good at handling large, complex real estate transactions and sophisticated joint venture agreements.” Douglas J. Lubelchek chairs the practice, and Darrin S. Forbes and Douglas M. Ellis are also recommended.

Patricia S. Cain and Jeffrey J. Bakker, co-chairs of the Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation practice group, were recommended for overseeing the revamping of retiree health plans, designing and implementing new deferred compensation schemes for executives, and assisting a client with rule 409A aspects of a non-qualified retirement plan for partners. Linda L. Hoseman “bolstered” the team’s ranks and is also recommended.

The firm’s Taxation practice won praise for “representing technology, healthcare, and real estate companies, as well as family offices and other private clients, in their tax matters.” The Legal 500 describes Scott J. Bakal and Jeffrey S. Shamberg as “Federal tax experts” and John A. Biek a “state and local tax expert.”
