Schiff Hardin LLP issued the following announcement on June 11.

Schiff Hardin LLP announced that Michael K. Moyers has joined the firm’s Private Clients, Trusts and Estates Practice Group as a partner in the Chicago office, along with two associates.

With experience both in-house and in private practice, Moyers uses sophisticated tax, trust, and charitable planning strategies to protect his clients’ assets. He represents fiduciaries and beneficiaries in litigation relating to trusts and estates, often involving issues relating to interests in a family or other closely held business.

Previously a partner at Winston & Strawn, Moyers started his legal career at Schiff Hardin, and has now returned to the firm more than 20 years later.

“Having grown up as a lawyer at Schiff Hardin, I am excited to return and contribute to this thriving practice group,” Moyers said. “The firm has always been known for its exceptional client service and experience in legal issues affecting affluent families. The deep bench of lawyers practicing in this field, and thought leadership on tax and estate planning issues demonstrated by Schiff Hardin, are becoming ever less common among full-service law firms.”

In addition to his legal practice, Moyers organized and managed the start-up of a nationally chartered trust company and served as chief operating officer of the trust company for two years. He received his B.A. with distinction and honors from Stanford University and his J.D. from Stanford University Law School, where he was an associate editor of the Stanford Law Review and elected to Order of the Coif.

Two Associates Also Joining Private Clients, Trusts and Estates Team

Also joining Schiff Hardin from Winston & Strawn is trusts and estates associate Joanna G. Morrison. She counsels clients on tax and estate planning, business succession planning, and charitable giving. Morrison received her B.A. from the University of Michigan, her J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School, and her LLM in Taxation from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law.

Oliver “Olly” Merrill also joins as an associate, bringing experience working at Wintrust Financial with private clients on the trust and wealth management side before beginning his legal career. Merrill received his B.A. from Williams College, his J.D. from University of Wisconsin Law School, and his LLM in Taxation from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law in May 2018.
