Property Tax Solutions accuses Xpress Tax Appeals of defamation

Internet

CHICAGO — A tax firm is suing Jason Terrell and Tax Payer Advocate Group LLC, which does business as Xpress Tax Appeals, citing alleged defamation.

Cook County Property Tax Solutions LLC, doing business as Property Tax Solutions, filed a complaint June 11 in Cook County Circuit Court, alleging the defendants violated the Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

According to the complaint, in 2018, the plaintiff's firm was featured on the defendants' website, citizensforfairpropertytaxes.org, with a "one-star" rating and a warning that consumers should "proceed with caution" when dealing with the firm.

The plaintiff alleges the website falsely claimed that firm principal Gregory Hiltons' professional conduct "robs homeowners of thousands of dollars in missed opportunities to lower their taxes."

Property Tax Solutions said it has been damaged by the alleged commercial disparagement and defamation.

The plaintiff said the defendants allegedly made false and misleading statements on the website, damaging the reputation of Property Tax Solutions.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks a judgment in an amount greater than $100,000, together with the costs of bringing the action. It is represented by C. Jefferey Thut of Noonan, Perillo & Thut in Waukegan.
