Patient blames Biomet Orthopedics, Rush Oak Park for post-operative infection

Medical malpractice 01

CHICAGO — A man is suing Biomet Orthopedics and Rusk Oak Park Hospital Inc., claiming Biomet manufactured an unsafe artificial knee system.

William Collins filed a complaint July 9 in Cook County Circuit Court saying the product was implanted in him without a warning regarding the risks associated with it.

According to the complaint, he underwent a left total knee arthroplasty on Feb. 22, 2010 at Rush Oak Park. He was later treated at a different facility for an infection and was told that the Biomet Vanguard System needed to be replaced.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks a judgment greater than $50,000 for actual, special and consequential damages, plus costs and disbursements, as well as other relief the court deems proper. He is represented by James Karamanis of Barney & Karamanis LLP in Chicago.
