CHICAGO — A patient is suing medical device manufacturer Depuy Orthopaedics Inc., citing alleged breach of warranty, negligence and strict product liability.

Laureen Malkin filed a complaint July 16 in Cook County Circuit Court, alleging the company's negligence resulted in life threatening injuries, pain and suffering.

According to the complaint, Malkin was diagnosed with high levels of chromium and cobalt in her blood on Dec. 20, 2016. The plaintiff said she sustained injuries, incurred medical expenses and was required to undergo a total right hip revision surgery to remove a defective hip replacement component that was implanted in 2007.

Malkin said the original surgeon did not know at the time about the metallosis, biologic toxicity, bone loss and other related diseases that could arise from the defendant's hip replacement component.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks a judgment in an amount in excess of the jurisdictional limits of the court, plus interest and costs of the action. She is represented by T. Edward Lyndon of Robbins & Robbins Ltd. in Chicago.
