CHICAGO — An employee is suing W.E. O'Neil Construction Co. and Northwestern University, citing alleged construction negligence.

Thomas Panik filed a complaint Aug. 9 in Cook County Circuit Court, claiming the defendants did not exercise a reasonable degree of care in the maintenance of a construction site to make sure no dangerous conditions existed.

According to the complaint, Panik was working for W.E. O'Neil on Oct. 27, 2016, at Northwestern University when a staircase came loose, allegedly causing it to fall and strike him.

As a result, Panik claims he sustained serious injuries and physical impairments and incurred medical expenses.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks a judgment greater than $50,000, plus costs of the lawsuit. He is represented by Vincent Petrosino of Serpico, Petrosino, Di Piero & O'Shea Ltd. in Chicago.
