CHICAGO — A law firm is suing the city of Chicago, citing an alleged violation of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) involving emails containing alleged racist content.

Law firm Henderson Parks LLC filed a complaint on Aug. 20 in Cook County Circuit Court alleging the city has since Feb. 12 refused to provide plaintiff's FOIA requests for the allegedly racist emails and related records between or involving employees of the city's Water Department.

The plaintiff asserts the city is allegedly trying to avoid disclosing information that might be politically embarrassing, and breached its obligation to operate openly and provide public records as efficiently as possible.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against defendants, order immediate production of the records requested, civil penalty, award attorneys' fees and costs, and further relief as deemed just and proper.

They are represented by attorneys Victor P. Henderson, Christopher W. Carmichael and Breanna N. Kantor of Henderson Parks LLC in Chicago.
