Schiff Hardin LLP issued the following announcement on Sept. 10.
Schiff Hardin LLP announced today that Derek G. Barella has joined the firm as a partner in the Labor and Employment Practice Group in the Chicago office. Barella has a broad-based practice featuring traditional labor matters, including collective bargaining, labor union-related issues, and client representation before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
“We are very pleased to have a seasoned lawyer of Derek’s caliber joining the firm,” said William J. Carroll, leader of the firm’s Labor and Employment Group. “Derek will deepen our existing capabilities across a number of areas, and adds substantial expertise in ERISA and other class action litigation. We look forward to his leadership in these areas.”
Barella is also expected to be a key member of Schiff Hardin’s rapidly expanding practice focusing on workplace investigations. He represents clients across a broad range of industries, including health care, manufacturing, law enforcement, logistics and distribution, business consulting, retail, publishing, and financial services.
He is formerly with Winston & Strawn LLP, where he was a labor and employment partner. A prolific writer and speaker on labor issues, Barella recently presented and published a paper about NLRB developments during the Trump Administration at the National Employment Law Institute’s 2018 Mid-Year Employment Law Conference. He has been a contributing editor to The Developing Labor Law, an American Bar Association publication, since 2004.
“I am excited to be joining Schiff Hardin at a time when the firm is expanding its Labor and Employment Practice Group,” Barella said. “Having practiced in Chicago for many years, I know the firm and its lawyers well. I have always been impressed by their exceptional quality, commitment to client service, and culture of collegiality and professionalism.”
Barella earned his undergraduate degree in Finance and Economics at Ball State University. He received his Juris Doctor from Indiana University School of Law.
