CHICAGO – A special administrator alleges a woman's lung cancer was not properly diagnosed or treated, leading to her death.

Anthony Crawford, as special administrator of the estate of Bernice Crawford, filed a complaint on Sept. 20 in Cook County Circuit Court against Advocate Health and Hospitals Corp., Advocate Health Care, Advocate Physician Partners, Advocate Medical Group and physician Shantala Sreerama, alleging wrongful death.

According to the complaint, Bernice Crawford was a patient of the Advocate defendants from 2010 to 2017. The suit states on Sept. 1, 2016, Bernice Crawford went to an Advocate medical facility complaining of hip and back pain. On Sept. 20, 2016, the suit states Crawford was brought to Advocate Christ Medical Center suffering from abdominal pain and increased shortness of breath with a dry cough.

The plaintiff alleges Crawford was diagnosed for the first time with adenocarcinoma of the lung with metastases to the liver on Sept. 22, 2016, and she died of lung cancer in March 2017.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to properly evaluate, diagnose and treat Crawford in a timely fashion, and failed to perform annual screening for lung cancer.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against defendant for damages in a sum of more than $50,000, plus costs of suit. He is represented by Mark McKenna of Hurley McKenna & Mertz PC in Chicago.
