CHICAGO — A mother is suing a doctor at MacNeal Hospital for negligence during the birth of her child, who suffered physical injuries as a result of the doctor's alleged use of excessive force.

Silvia Arrieta filed a complaint on Oct. 12 in Cook County Circuit Court against Ramesh Seeras and VHS of Illinois, which operates as MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, alleging they had breached professional standards of care and treatment.

Arrieta was admitted to McNeal on Oct. 18, 2011, under the care of Seeras, according to the complaint.

Arrieta alleged Seeras had used excessive force in the delivery of her child, failed to timely diagnose shoulder dystocia, and failed to employ proper techniques and maneuvers in cases of dystocia. As a result, the child sustained severe right brachial plexus injury and other physical injuries, she said.

The plaintiff requested a trial by jury, seeking compensation. She is represented by Timothy McArdle of the Nolan Law Group in Chicago.
