CHICAGO — A mother is suing the City of Chicago after her son died in a crash involving a car being pursued by police at high speed.

Bonita Cowan filed a complaint on Oct. 15 in Cook County Circuit Court citing negligence and wrongful death, saying the city had failed to follow applicable safety guidelines and regulations.

The deceased, Antonio Cowan, was a passenger in a car near the intersection of 69th Street and South Loomis Boulevard on Oct. 1 when Chicago police pursued a speeding 2013 Ford Fusion down 69th Street without activating the police car's lights and siren, the complaint said.

The Ford Fusion collided with the car Antonio Cowan was riding in, leading to his death, it said.

The plaintiff alleged the police had pursued a speeding vehicle despite the high risk of injury or death to the general public, and failed to utilize its lights and siren for the safety of the general public.

As a result, the plaintiff and other next of kin lost the deceased's love, care, affection, support and attention, and incurred medical, funeral and burial expenses, the complaint said.

The plaintiff requested a trial by jury, seeking damages of more than $50,000. She is represented by Larry R. Rogers Jr. of Power Rogers & Smith in Chicago.
