CHICAGO – An Oklahoma resident is seeking damages from the Barrington distributor of a French company's medical device over allegations the device was defectively designed.

Allen Steddum filed a complaint on Oct. 30 in Cook County Circuit Court against Aspide Medical and BG Medical LLC alleging strict liability, negligence and other counts.

According to the complaint, the defendants manufactured and distributed Aspide Surgimesh XB, a polypropylene medical mesh. The suit states the mesh was implanted in the plaintiff in February 2012 for hernia repair. He alleges he experienced pain and other problems after implantation and had the mesh removed in September 2017.

The plaintiff alleges the mesh was defectively designed, was inadequate or insufficient to maintain its integrity during normal use and was not properly manufactured.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against defendant for compensatory damages in an amount in excess of court's jurisdictional requisite. He is represented by Allen N. Schwartz of Kravolec, Jambois & Schwartz in Chicago and Robert L. Salim and Lisa Causey-Streete of Salim-Beasley LLC in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
