Chicago partner Anita Mauro has been named a 2018 Notable Minority Lawyer by Crain’s Chicago Business. She is one of 58 legal professionals recognized on the 2018 list.
Anita represents clients in banking and commercial finance transactions and real estate tax assessment (RETA) mattersd. Crain’s showcased Anita’s substantial experience in connection with the administrative adjudication of tax exempt status for charitable and religious organizations before local Boards of Review and the Illinois Department of Revenue, including a precedent-setting case in Illinois allowing meditation facilities with a yoga practice to qualify for tax-exempt status on their properties.
Crain’s also recognized Anita’s achievements for clients in RETA matters, including her work helping numerous nonprofit charitable and religious organizations obtain non-homestead property tax exemptions over the past 18 months. For her work on behalf of PAWS Chicagoand the Puppy Mill Project, an educational and advocacy organization dedicated to fighting puppy mill cruelty, Anita received the 2018 Animal Welfare Leadership award from PAWS earlier this year.
Anita co-chairs Chicago recruitment for Thompson Coburn’s Employment Committee, and is a member of the Firm’s Diversity Committee and its Sustainability team.
Anita’s commitment to diversity is rooted in her family: Her maternal grandmother’s grandfather, Lloyd G. Wheeler, was the first black lawyer admitted to the Illinois Bar on April 20, 1869.
