CHICAGO – The widow of a lawyer has filed a wrongful death suit against the man who allegedly strangled her husband and the owners and operators of his office building.

Amita A. Patel, as independent administrator of the estate of Jigar K. Patel, filed a complaint on Dec. 4 in Cook County Circuit Court against John G. Panaligan, Bern Management Inc. and Northbrook Suites LLC, citing the Wrongful Death Act

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges on Dec. 7, 2016, Jigar K. Patel, was in his office at 1363 Shermer Road in Northbrook, leased from Bern and Northbrook, when Panaligan entered the premises posing as a new client and allegedly strangled him, causing his death.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to provide adequate security measures to protect Patel, failed to adequately train and supervise its security personnel to patrol the premises, and failed to warn Patel that its security system was inadequate.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendants of more than $50,000, plus costs. She is represented by attorney Timothy J. Deffet, in Chicago.
