CHICAGO – A patient alleges the negligence of a surgeon during a hernia procedure required him to undergo emergency surgery.

Dennis Stewart filed a complaint on Dec. 17 in Cook County Circuit Court against Northwestern Medicine, Northwestern Memorial Healthcare and physician Michael Monfils, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, on Feb. 16, Monfils performed a hernia repair on the plaintiff at Rochelle Memorial Hospital. The plaintiff alleges after the procedure, he experienced abdominal pain, atrial fibrillation, fever, tachycardia and shortness of breath and was transferred to another hospital because Monfils allegedly could not determine the cause of the post-operative symptoms.

The suit states he was transferred to a Wisconsin hospital for emergency surgery Feb. 18 and was diagnosed with a necrotic stomach fundus and incarcerated hernia.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to diagnose and treat him for his condition in a timely manner.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks more than $50,000 plus costs of suit. He is represented by Mark R. McKenna of Hurley McKenna & Mertz PC in Chicago.
