CLARK HILL: Clark Hill Strasburger Attorney Sam Louis to Participate in Roundtable on Danger of Counterfeit Medicines

Letter editor 03

Clark Hill issued the following announcement on March 18.

On Tuesday, March 19, 2019, Clark Hill healthcare attorney Sam Louis joins former FBI Director Louis Freeh in a discussion regarding the growing threat posed by illegal pill presses – the easily-obtainable machinery used to create counterfeit medicines.

The supply and demand of dangerous counterfeit and illegally-imported medications has created one of the most serious health challenges in the United States. Counterfeit pills made with fentanyl have been found in 46 states, and the prevalence of illegal pill presses are contributing to this crisis.

In its most recent white paper Pill Presses: An Overlooked Threat to American Patients, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators, and The Partnership for Safe Medicines collaborate to:

-analyze the availability of pill presses,

-outline how these illegal devices enable criminals to manufacture counterfeit medicines,

-identify potential solutions to deter use and decrease risks,

-provide effective tools for law enforcement, and

-improve patient information and resources.

The esteemed panel includes George Karavetsos, former Director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Office of Criminal Investigations, Shabbir Safdar, Executive Director of the Partnership for Safe Medicines, and Gregg Jones of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. Families who have been directly impacted by counterfeit medicines will be invited to share their personal stories.
