Baker and Hostetler issued the following announcement on June 10.
BakerHostetler announced that J. Brian Davis has joined the firm as leader of its international tax team.
The team was previously led by Paul M. Schmidt until he was elevated to firm chairman at the start of the year. With more than two decades of experience, Davis’ impressive career spans the landscape of perspective – he has provided tax law counsel to clients as a principal at a Big Four accounting firm, as partner at Ivins, Phillips & Barker Chtd. and as director of international tax for a publicly traded global media conglomerate.
Davis, who is based in D.C., has practiced in all areas of U.S. federal income taxation, advising public and private clients on a myriad of corporate and international tax issues including foreign tax credits, GILTI, BEAT and FDII. His clients include U.S. and non-U.S. multinational enterprises representing a variety of industries, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, life sciences, consumer products, technology and media.
Davis draws on his professional consulting experiences to develop creative technical solutions with qualitative and quantitative resonance, and he leverages his experience in industry to translate complex tax concepts and strategies into a language that business executives appreciate. His understanding of how tax and business strategy coalesce has earned him a regular role as trusted adviser to clients involved in international mergers and acquisitions activities.
“There are few attorneys with the broad international tax experience and the proven leadership skills that Brian brings to the table,” said Jeffrey H. Paravano, chair of BakerHostetler’s Tax Group and managing partner of the D.C. office. “I’m thrilled that Brian has joined our incredibly strong tax team, and I look forward to his leadership on international tax issues in the months and years ahead.”
“Coming off a full rewrite of the U.S. tax laws and with many rules still being worked out, I’m excited to join BakerHostetler’s acclaimed Tax Group where I’ll be able to offer clients the full scope of legal services required to navigate regulatory landscape,” Davis said. “Having access to the firm’s highly regarded tax attorneys and its well-connected policy team will allow our clients to attack the most complex tax matters from all angles.”
Davis received his J.D. from the University of Oregon and his LL.M. from New York University School of Law.
For more than 100 years, BakerHostetler’s Tax Group has helped clients manage one of their most significant costs – taxes – by providing sound and practical advice in federal, international, employee benefits, private wealth, tax exempt and state and local tax matters. Team members have served in senior positions in the Department of Treasury, the IRS, the Joint Committee on Taxation and on Capitol Hill.
