Thompson Coburn LLP issued the following announcement on Oct. 2.

Thompson Coburn is pleased to announce that Eric Tower has joined the Firm as a health care partner in our Chicago office. Eric is a former vice president and associate general counsel for Advocate Health Care, the largest health care system in Illinois and one of the largest nonprofit health care systems in the U.S.

Eric will draw on his 16 years of experience serving as a key legal and business counselor to a large nationally recognized health care network to advise clients on a wide range of business-critical transactional, operational and litigation matters.

“Eric is the total package for our health care clients across the Midwest and beyond,” said Evan Goldfarb, chair of Thompson Coburn’s Health Care group. “He has led complex health care mergers and acquisitions, successfully navigated a range of regulatory reviews, and pioneered strategies that have improved operational efficiencies within a large nonprofit system. We’re so pleased that Eric has joined us and will help us strengthen our platform for clients from our Chicago office.”

“I’m excited to return to private practice and join a talented health care team supported by a strong full-service firm like Thompson Coburn,” said Eric. “I look forward to serving a diverse range of health care clients and advising them on day-to-day operational issues and complex transactions and regulatory actions.”

During his time as an executive and senior in-house counsel for Advocate, Eric led mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures in excess of $10 billion and worked extensively with the system's nationally recognized population health management and managed care initiatives. He also served as primary counsel to a 1,500-physician medical group.

Eric is unique among health care practitioners for the depth of his experience in government investigations and litigation, including reviews brought by the FTC, CMS, IRS and the Senate Finance Committee. He is skilled at navigating these reviews, interacting with government agencies and effectively responding to government inquiries and actions, including antitrust litigation.

Eric holds a master of law in health care from the Chicago School of Law at Loyola University, a J.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and a B.A. in History from Northwestern University.
