Another class action lawsuit has been filed against health insurance company Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois on behalf of customers who may have had their personal information exposed in a data breach.
"It took BCBSIL nearly nine months to discover the data breach, and nearly a full year to inform impacted individuals that their private identifying information was disclosed to an unauthorized third party," says the suit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
The personal information included names, dates of birth, group numbers, subscriber numbers, addresses, phone numbers, claim numbers, medical services information and Social Security numbers, according to the lawsuit.
Blue Cross "did not have adequate security protocols to prevent, detect and stop the data breach and allowing the private identifying information of Plaintiff and the proposed Class Members to be accessed by unauthorized individuals," the suit says.
Blue Cross also failed to adequately train employees on reasonable cybersecurity protocols, the suit claims.
It seeks unspecified compensatory, actual, exemplary, statutory and punitive damages.
The plaintiffs are represented by attorney Gary M. Klinger, of Milberg Coleman Bryson Phillips Grossman PLLC.
