The Firm has been ranked among the "Fearsome Foursome"—law firms clients don't want to see on the other side of the table—in the BTI Litigation Outlook 2024 report, published this month by The BTI Consulting Group, Inc. This is the 10th time and fourth consecutive year that Jones Day has been named to the elite list. The report is based on feedback from senior in-house legal decision makers.

"These are the firms striking the utmost fear into the hearts of seasoned general counsel and legal decision makers," says the BTI report. "The BTI Fearsome Foursome are the firms clients tell us they least want to see on the other side of the table in litigation because they are relentless, cunning, aggressive, very smart, and play to win—and win big."

According to BTI, the law firms named among its "Fearsome Foursome" stand apart because they consistently:

  • Redefine the Rules: Are unbound by accepted definitions and norms, develop new interpretations of old precedents, and challenge convention.
  • Take on What Others Won't: New and novel matters are increasingly part of the landscape. While some firms stop and wonder if they want to take these matters on, the most feared firms relish the challenge.
  • (Make) Very Early Assessments: Operate confidently with fewer known facts, adjust and pivot where needed. Quick to share their early assessments with their clients—who see it as a big differentiator.
  • (Are) Unrelenting: Every perceived barrier is a test. Setbacks exist so the Fearsome Foursome can figure out how to overcome each one.
  • Link Unconnected Ideas: Link ideas together even when the connection is not immediately obvious. Unconventional thinking leads to breakthroughs and novel thinking—often the antidote for the new and novel complex claims.
Jones Day earned the most "Powerhouse" rankings of the 61 other law firms in the report, and is ranked as "Powerhouse" or "Leader" in eight of the specific litigation categories profiled:

  • Intellectual Property
  • Class Action
  • Cybersecurity
  • Securities & Finance
  • Complex Employment
  • Product Liability
  • Complex Commercial
  • Commercial
"The lawyers who serve as leaders of their in-house litigation departments are in the best position to understand exactly what their outside lawyers must bring to bear when high-stakes litigation threatens their organizations," said Stephanie Parker, Co-Leader of Jones Day's Business & Tort Litigation Practice. "This recognition shows that our collaborative approach to serving clients in every facet of litigation, from counseling through trial and appeal, is an effective approach to ardently protect their interests. As always, we thank our clients for the trust they place in us to represent them in some of the most significant disputes in the world."

The rankings were based solely on more than 280 in-depth telephone interviews with leading legal decision makers at large organizations with $1 billion or more in revenue. The research is independent and unbiased—no law firm or organization other than BTI sponsors the study.

The BTI Litigation Outlook 2024 report includes empirical analysis of current and future trends in litigation and is based on more than 20,000 interviews spanning more than 20 years with corporate counsel and other legal decision makers.
