A man has sued United Airlines after a cup of "boiling hot water" fell off his tray table on a flight and allegedly scalded him.
The incident allegedly occurred Aug. 9 on a flight from San Diego to Newark, N.J.. according to a lawsuit filed by Jeffrey Snell in Cook County Circuit Court in Chicago.
"United flight attendants placed a cup of hot water on Jeffrey Snell's tray but not in the designated area for cups," the lawsuit states. "The cup of hot water was boiling."
The tray was broken and "tilted downward toward the back of the seat in front of Jeffrey Snell," he suit alleges. The cup slid off the tray and scalded Snell, according to the lawsuit.
Airline employees were allegedly negligent in allowing the tray to be used and not exercising the "highest degree of care and caution" to protect passengers, the lawsuit states.
Snell seeks unspecified money damages, plus attorney fees. He is represented by attorney Edward G. Willer, of the firm of Corboy & Demetrio P.C., of Chicago.
