A female Chicago Police homicide detective has sued the city, claiming the Chicago Police Department wrongly punished her after she complained about alleged abuse and harassment she allegedly suffered at the hands of her former detective partner and one-time romantic partner.
In the lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court, the plaintiff is only identified as Jane Doe.
"Jane Doe served as a detective for the Chicago Police Department on one of its prestigious homicide teams and performed exceptional work as a detective," the suit states. "However, during her tenure on the homicide team, she suffered extreme abuse at the hands of another Chicago police
detective," a male partner who she claimed "repeatedly physically, mentally, and sexually abused" her.
When Doe reported the abuse to her superiors, "the City, incredibly, chose to punish her and not him," the suit says.
She was take off the homicide team and told to find a new unit, but not to mention a hostile work environment as her reason for seeking a transfer, the suit said.
Doe claims the Chicago Police Department "protected and shielded" her ex-partner "from any consequence."
"The City did not remove him from his unit of assignment, did not send him for a fitness for duty evaluation, did not impose any discipline on him, did not bring criminal charges against him, and even allowed him to retain his city issued firearm, notwithstanding his threats to kill Jane Doe," the lawsuit said.
Doe seeks monetary damages plus attorney fees.
She is represented by attorneys M. Megan O’Malley and John P. Madden. of O'Malley & Madden PC, of Chicago.
