Katriina McGuire | Thompson Coburn LLP

Katriina McGuire, managing partner of Thompson Coburn’s Chicago office, was interviewed for a recent report in The Business Journals on the challenges in developing missing-middle housing and the broader debates around density that vary across neighborhoods and regions. She commented on the significant shifts in zoning dynamics over her 25 years as a real estate land use attorney in the Chicago area.

McGuire noted instances where residents and officials advocate for higher density, leading to neighborhoods where building single-family homes is no longer allowed. "Folks are advocating pretty hard for higher density and, in fact, in certain areas of the cities and zoning districts, you can no longer build a single-family home. ...That used to be a baseline: You could put a single-family home pretty much anywhere" she said.
