HSPRD Honors National Native American Heritage Month

Award

Trophy | Unplash by Giorgio Trovato

As November is National Native American Heritage Month, HSPRD celebrates and honors the critical work and indelible advocacy of Native American peoples in Chicago and throughout the country. Chicago is home to one of the largest urban Native American populations in the country and HSPRD acknowledges that the firm, and this city, reside on unceded land home to many tribes, including the Anishnaabe Tribes of Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi, and the Ho-Chunk, Kaskaskia, Kiikaapoi, Mascouten, Menominee, Meskwaki, Myaamia, and Peoria Nations.

HSPRD celebrates recent important victories, such as the Supreme Court’s decision in Haaland v. Brackeen upholding the Indian Child Welfare Act, and the nomination this year of the first Native American woman to Oklahoma’s federal judiciary, Sara Hill, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. But HSPRD also recognizes that the law has often been weaponized to erode Tribal Sovereignty.  We stand in solidarity with the Native American communities and advocates working tirelessly to uphold Tribal Sovereignty and protect human rights.
