Am Law 100 firm Polsinelli has expanded its Nonprofit Organizations Practice Group and welcomed Jacob Zerkle as counsel in the firm’s Chicago office. Zerkle is an experienced tax attorney focusing his practice on meeting the legal and tax needs of charities, private foundations, community foundations and churches. He will work closely with Polsinelli’s nonprofit attorneys in Kansas City, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Nashville.

“We are excited to welcome Jacob in Chicago and grow our nationwide team focused on nonprofits,” said Lisa M. Schultes, Chair of Polsinelli’s Nonprofit Organizations Practice Group. “Jacob has more than a decade of experience in serving nonprofit organizations and charities with skilled insights and a business-minded approach to their needs. He will be a great asset for our clients, and we are thrilled to have him on board.”

Zerkle advises nonprofit clients on the complex legal environment governing exempt organizations. He guides nonprofit organizations and their founders during the start-up process and throughout their entire life cycle, including through entity formation and the initial planning process, developing appropriate governance documents, policies, and procedures, and obtaining federal and state tax exemptions. Prior to joining Polsinelli, Zerkle worked at other Am Law firms and one of the “Big Four” accounting firms. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from Valparaiso University Law School where he served as editor-in-chief of the Valparaiso University Law Review.

Polsinelli’s Nonprofit Organizations Practice Group guides nonprofit and charitable organizations through challenges that can hamper their ability to succeed. The firm’s lawyers act as strategic partners which allows their clients to focus on what they do best, furthering their mission. Polsinelli’s cross-disciplinary team, supported by the depth and breadth of the entire Polsinelli team, possesses a broad range of experience to advise clients across the spectrum of legal challenges and strategic decision-making, including entity formation, governance, giving and fundraising, endowments and fund management, tax compliance, labor and employment, finance, intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, public policy, real estate, and litigation.
