Passenger sues Chicago Transit Authority claiming he was injured when bus collided with fire hydrant

CHICAGO – A passenger has filed a negligence lawsuit against the Chicago Transit Authority and its agents, alleging that he was injured when the bus collided with a fire hydrant.

According to a lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court, on Dec. 28, 2022, the plaintiff, Jeremiah Washington, was a passenger aboard Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus #1642. The bus was traveling along the 6 Jackson Park Express route, going southbound on South Lake Park Avenue, when it allegedly collided with a fire hydrant located in front of 4700 S Lake Park Ave and caused passengers serious injury.

CTA and its agents are accused of various forms of negligence, including failure to maintain control of the vehicle, failure to provide proper warning of the collision, failing to maintain a proper lookout, operating the vehicle at a speed greater than reasonable for conditions, operating a vehicle with inadequate brakes, operating a vehicle on a sidewalk, and general negligence.

Washington claims to have sustained internal and external injuries due to the incident. He is seeking a judgment of damages in excess of $30,000 for pain, suffering, disability, loss of normal life, lost wages, damage to personal property, and medical expenses, plus court costs and any other relief the court deems proper.
