CHICAGO – A woman has filed a negligence lawsuit, claiming that she was injured in a vehicle accident when a driver tried to execute an unsafe U-turn at the intersection of Lake Street and 36th Avenue in Melrose Park.

According to a lawsuit filed in the Cook County Circuit Court, on Nov. 5, 2022, the plaintiff, Susan Martinez Alcantar, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Olea R. Salgado. Alcantar claims that they were traveling eastbound on Lake Street, near the intersection of Lake Street and 36th Avenue in Melrose Park, when the defendant, Thomas E. Lafferty, who was driving in the same direction, attempted to execute a U-turn onto westbound Lake Street and collided with Salgado's vehicle.

Lafferty is accused of several acts of negligence, including failure to maintain a proper lookout, failure to adequately control his vehicle, operating his vehicle at an excessive speed, carelessly executing an unsafe U-turn, failure to yield the right of way, failure to change lanes carefully, and failure to take evasive action when necessary.

Alcantar claims to have suffered bodily injuries as a result of the collision. She is seeking a judgment exceeding $50,000 for pain, suffering, loss of normal life, disability, loss of income, financial losses, medical expenses, and any other relief the court deems proper.

The plaintiff is represented by attorney Jeffrey M. Landry of River North Law Group, P.C., in Chicago.
