CHICAGO – Passengers have filed a negligence lawsuit against the Chicago Transit Authority, claiming they were injured when the bus they were on suddenly came to a stop and rear-ended another vehicle.
According to a lawsuit filed in the Cook County Circuit Court, on Dec. 8, 2022, the plaintiffs, Jeanpierre Cordova and Janet Rodriguez, were passengers on the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus numbered M233523. They claim that while they were aboard the bus, the driver suddenly slammed on the brakes to avoid a rear-end collision with another vehicle, causing injury to passengers as they were thrown forward. Despite the driver's attempts to avoid the collision, the bus still struck the vehicle from behind.
The plaintiffs accuse the CTA and the driver of several acts of negligence, including failing to keep a proper lookout, failing to provide passengers with the highest degree of care, failing to hire competent drivers, operating the bus at an unreasonable speed, and stopping abruptly.
Cordova and Rodriguez claim to have sustained severe internal and external bodily injuries as a result of the incident, including nervous system shock, bruises, contusions, and lacerations. They are seeking damages in excess of $50,000 for pain, suffering, loss of normal life, physical impairment, loss of wages, and medical costs, plus court costs, and any other relief the court deems proper.
The plaintiffs are represented by attorney Christopher Bassmaji of the Law Office of Jonathan Schlack, P.C., in Chicago.
