A man claims a Chicago Starbucks restaurant served him coffee which contained enough of a cleaning agent to make him ill.

Plaintiff Mohammed Hamideh filed a lawsuit against Starbucks Corporation, alleging that he fell violently ill after consuming a cup of coffee at the Starbucks North Park location in Chicago on June 22, 2022.

Hamideh claims that upon drinking the Pike Place Roast coffee, he detected a chemical taste and began to feel nauseated with a burning sensation in his mouth. The complaint alleges that Starbucks negligently used an urn which had contained Urnex descaling powder or another chemical cleaning product and failed to ensure the coffee was safe for consumption.

The lawsuit accuses Starbucks of multiple negligent acts including failing to inspect or prepare the coffee product properly, failing to detect the presence of the cleaning product in the coffee, and failing to warn Hamideh about it.

Hamideh is seeking unspecified damages.

Hamideh is represented by attorney Nikitas Fudukos, of Seidman Margulis & Fairman LLP, of Chicago.
