In the Appellate Court of Illinois, First Judicial District, plaintiffs Karl and Lynn Starr are suing Presence Central and Suburban Hospitals Network, Debra L. Juhant, Larissa Chaidez, Sumit Singh M.D., American Anesthesiology Associates of Illinois S.C., Jonathan C. Wu M.D., and Du Page Medical Group LTD. The case (No. 1-23-1120) was filed on March 29, 2024 and is an appeal from the Circuit Court of Cook County (No. 21 L 12506). The lawsuit is about medical malpractice and loss of consortium claims.

The Starrs allege that Mr. Starr was admitted to Presence on February 21, 2020 for a colostomy reversal procedure performed by Dr. Wu. They claim that by February 25, while still an inpatient, Mr. Starr began to exhibit symptoms of hypotension and sepsis which were not properly addressed by the hospital staff or doctors involved in his care.

The Starrs further allege that due to negligence from the defendants including nurses Juhant and Chaidez as well as doctors Singh and Wu, Mr. Starr suffered from respiratory failure, ARDS, hypoxia, septic shock which led to his transfer to the University of Chicago for ECMO treatment and a prolonged hospital stay.

The plaintiffs are seeking judgment against all defendants for their alleged negligence leading to Mr. Starr's deteriorating health condition which resulted in gangrene development in both feet and his right thumb, eventually leading to a bilateral transtibial amputation.
