Adebukola Adenekan has filed a lawsuit against Marklund Children’s Home in the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, under the case ID 1:24-cv-03043 on April 16, 2024. The plaintiff accuses the defendant of national origin-based discrimination, harassment, and retaliation under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Adenekan alleges that she was subjected to different terms and conditions of employment compared to others not within her protected class since November 6, 2023. She claims that she was treated differently due to her Nigerian origin and faced a hostile work environment which led to her unlawful termination on February 9, 2024.
The plaintiff also asserts that her co-workers often ignored her, refused to call her by her nickname "Bookie", and acted uncomfortable around her due to her national origin. In November 2023, Adenekan raised objections against the defendant's safety protocols and complained about being treated differently due to her national origin.
Adenekan is seeking redress for the defendant's alleged retaliatory discharge of her employment in response to her protected activity under Illinois common law and the Illinois Worker’s Compensation Act.
