In the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, Scott Maltz, Susan Maltz, Kevin Maltz, Steven Maltz, Amanda Gaisford, Jennifer Wesman and Craig Wesman have filed a lawsuit against United Airlines Inc. The case ID is 2024L002882 and it was filed on March 15, 2024. The lawsuit stems from an incident that occurred on December 18, 2022, where the plaintiffs allege they nearly died on United Airlines Flight 1722 due to the negligence of the airline and its flight crew.

The plaintiffs are represented by BartlettChen LLC and Colson Hicks Eidson P.A., while the defendant is a Delaware corporation with its principal place of business in Chicago. The complaint details a harrowing event where the Boeing 777 aircraft came within seconds of crashing into the Pacific Ocean due to miscommunication between pilots regarding flap settings. This alleged negligence subjected them to extreme terror and emotional distress during the aircraft’s precipitous dive.

The plaintiffs seek redress for their extreme distress caused by this near-death experience. They accuse United Airlines and its pilots of causing severe terror, emotional distress, mental anguish, anxiety, pain and suffering due to their actions which led to a rapid descent towards the ocean at a rate of -8,536 feet per minute.
