In the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, plaintiff Darras Miller has filed a lawsuit against Costco Wholesale Corporation. The case, identified as 1:24-cv-03831, was filed on May 10, 2024. Miller alleges racial discrimination and retaliation by his employer.

Miller began working at Costco's Chicago location in November 2015. He claims that starting from October 2022, he was subjected to unwelcome conversations of a racial nature by his supervisors. He cites incidents involving store manager Kenny Hanley, General Manager Jonathon Taub and Operations Manager Marco Charo which he found racially offensive. These comments included questioning the use of a very specific racial slur and comments regarding the plaintiffs dislike of watermelon.

The plaintiff also alleges that he faced retaliation after complaining about a racially hostile work environment to his assistant manager and human resources associate in May 2023. According to the court documents, Miller filed a timely charge of race discrimination and retaliation with the EEOC and received his Right to Sue letters on February 11, 2024.

Miller is seeking damages for the alleged racial discrimination and retaliation. He demands a trial by jury on all issues triable in this case.
