A major data breach has left thousands of individuals vulnerable to identity theft and fraud, as a class action lawsuit is filed against a prominent golf course and hospitality management company. On October 2, 2024, William Campe initiated legal proceedings in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against Kemper Sports Management, LLC. The lawsuit accuses the company of failing to protect sensitive personal information from cybercriminals.

The case centers around a cyberattack that occurred on April 1, 2024, when unauthorized actors accessed Kemper Sports Management's systems and obtained personally identifiable information (PII) belonging to Campe and other class members. According to the complaint, the company failed to adequately secure this information, which includes social security numbers and other sensitive data. Campe claims that this negligence has resulted in an increased risk of identity theft for all affected individuals.

Campe alleges that Kemper Sports Management was aware of the potential risks but did not take necessary precautions to safeguard personal data. "Defendant maintained the Private Information in a reckless and negligent manner," states the complaint. It further argues that the company’s actions constitute negligence and violate federal and state statutes aimed at protecting consumer data.

The lawsuit seeks various forms of relief from the court, including compensatory damages for losses incurred by class members due to identity theft or fraud resulting from the breach. Additionally, it calls for injunctive relief requiring Kemper Sports Management to implement improved security measures to prevent future breaches.

Representing Campe in this case are attorneys specializing in data breach litigation. The case is presided over by judges from the Northern District of Illinois under Case ID: 1:24-cv-09352.
